Mission Statement

The mission of the Chicago Northwestern District is to enable, empower, and equip local faith communities

to make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Message from the District Superintendent, Reverend James Preston

For just as the body is one and has many members, all the member of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we are all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—but we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12: 12-13

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ!

Peace and grace to you from the fifty-seven congregations, two campus ministries, one college, and many other exciting ministries of the Chicago Northwestern District of The United Methodist Church. Framed by the Eisenhower Expressway, southern Lake County, parts of I-294, and Lake Michigan, the district is a beautiful tapestry of diverse faith communities serving a mosaic of neighborhoods in Chicago as well as a plethora of suburbs in Cook and Lake counties.

We read of Paul’s vision of the church in First Corinthians in the New Testament of the Bible. Paul’s hopes are evidenced in our racial, cultural, and social diversity as well as our deep and profound commitment to offer Christ in personal witness and social holiness. Our communities of faith include Korean, African, Latino-Hispanic, Vietnamese, Caribbean, African-American, Indian, Pakistani, multicultural, suburban, urban, large, small, Reconciling, and much, much…more. Truly, we are many parts of one sacred and Spirit-filled body.

In the midst of our diversity, we celebrate intentional ministry and mission through creative worship, powerful social justice ministry, transformative mission, and creative new outreach. From campus ministry to senior adult care, we live out our Christian faith in concrete ways of witness and expression. We also rejoice in the vision of planting new faith communities in growing areas of our district as we embrace our common vision of Harvest 2020.

I want to personally invite you to visit our churches and to explore our many ministries as a part of God’s loving call in your life and journey. I know you will experience wonderful people, warm hospitality, and a dynamic expression of the Christian faith in the twenty-first century. Welcome to the Chicago Northwestern District!

In Christ,
Rev. James Preston, District Superintendent

Stewardship Conference Offers New Insights

Rev. Dr. Michael Reeves, senior associate pastor for stewardship at Saint Andrew UMC in Plano, Texas, led the sixth annual UM Foundation Stewardship Conference. Over 140 persons enjoyed a day of fellowship, worship, and learning related to a climate of generosity in our congregations. Permission has been given to scan the workbook and it will be emailed to each pastor. If others would like a copy, please contact Rev. James Preston at jpreston@umcnic.org to request a copy. Quoting Eugene Grimm in his book, Generous People, Dr. Reeves said that Stewardship Ministries must follow three commandments:

1. Keep it positive. Negativity rarely raises money.
2. Keep it Biblical. People need to see what God's word says for us in our giving.
3. Stress the Mission! NOT the need. People give to ministry that transforms lives.

He also offered a challenging question to each of the participants:

Have you ever made a gift or financial commitment to your church that caused you to give up something you valued?

Are we sacrificially giving for the work of God's justice and hope in Christ?  Do we invite our brothers and sisters to offer gifts in thanksgiving toward the mission of Jesus and the transformation of the world? OR are we maintaining a building or an institution. These were many of the discussions at the event.

Harvest 2020: Focus on Healthy Discipleship

Harvest 2020 continues to expand and grow across the Chicago Northwestern District and our conference. Amazing and exciting things are springing up and flourishing in many different places. As we enter the new church conference season, our church conferences will focus primarily on the component of Healthy Discipleship. (Remember, the other two are Planting New Faith Communities and Cluster Ministry) Healthy discipleship focuses on helping our current churches and the people of the churches "go deeper" in their following of Jesus and their sharing of faith. The acronym SEED reminds us that we must SEEK, ENGAGE, EMPOWER, and DEPLOY as faithful disciples of Christ. How is your church growing disciples? Are there ways for people to seek, engage, empower, and deploy? Visit the new Harvest 2020 website for resources and informatin. The web site is located at  www.harvest2020.org. We celebrate the work of Harvest 2020 as a movement of the Spirit in our conference. Be in prayer for our work together.
